Greens councillors oppose local government motion against antisemitism and racism

A national local government motion urging a coordinated national framework to tackle antisemitism and racism has passed today despite opposition from Greens councillors.

The motion secured 110 votes to 89 at the Australian Local Government Association’s National General Assembly in Canberra this week.

Jointly put forward by Waverley, Glen Eira and Port Phillip councils, it called on the federal government to lead and fund a nationwide strategy. This includes education programs and partnerships to combat antisemitism, all forms of racism, hatred and bigotry, while strengthening social cohesion.

The framework would be developed in partnership with local government, acknowledging councils’ key role in building safe, inclusive and connected communities.

Before the vote, Merri-bek Mayor Nat Abboud tried to amend the motion to include a specific reference to Islamophobia and other changes. The Australian Local Government Association committee ruled the amendment inadmissible.

Abboud then spoke against the original motion, joined by other Greens councillors in opposition.

Supporters noted the motion already covered all forms of racism, hatred and bigotry while naming antisemitism explicitly.

Waverley Mayor Will Nemesh expressed disappointment at the level of opposition.

He told JWire: “I was disappointed the motion was not unanimously endorsed. Combating antisemitism and racism should not be controversial.”

The annual National General Assembly gathers mayors, shire presidents and councillors from across Australia to set policy priorities and lobby the federal government for action.
