The Online Hate Prevention Institute has celebrated its 10th anniversary.

Dr Andre Oboler and Paul Fletcher now the Federal Communications Minister in 2014

All the initial directors are still members of the organisation with Dr Andre Oboler and Jo Silver being the only two founding directors who serve on the current board.

CEO Andre Oboler told J-Wire: “I have spoken to many of them to thank them for their efforts over the years.
While we do a significant amount of work on antisemitism and Holocaust denial, OHPI deals with all forms of online hate and our board reflects and while always including the Jewish community, has also always extended beyond it. We are proud to be an organisation where people of different faiths, cultures, and nationalities can work together in the public interest to improve not only online safety but to prevent online hate from going viral and spilling over into society at large.
We are also proud to be at the leading edge of this work globally. In the last few months, we have presented at a global technical forum for the IEEE Computer Society, attended the Malmo Forum, met with government and civil society officials from Sweden, Denmark, and the UK; present in Moscow for the Russian Jewish Congress, online for the World Zionist Organisation on the recommendation of the ZFA, given evidence to the Australian Parliament in support of ECAJ, and finalised a project with Facebook (now Meta) and the Australian Human Rights Commission to tackle anti-Asian hate on Facebook and Instagram. “
OHPI grew out of the Community Internet Engagement Project funded by the Pratt Foundation and based at the Zionist Federation of Australia. With a Board of Directors split between Sydney and Melbourne, meetings took place via teleconference.
The founding directors were:
  • Andre Oboler
  • James Altman
  • Ron Weiser
  • Jo Silver
  • John Rosenberg
  • Manny Waks
  • Dan Goodhardt
  • Baden Hughes
Assisted by:
  • Peter Hersh (OHPI’s Accountant)
