Labor Party Draft policy 2026 – Israel and Palestine

The following is Labor’s 2026 Draft National Platform presented at the Federal Conference in Adelaide on 25 July, 2026. The final platform was largely unchanged and will be replaced here when published.

Israel and Palestine

    1. Labor has long supported a two-state solution, and the right of Israel and Palestine to exist, as the only path towards a future where Palestinians and Israelis can live in freedom, safety and security.
    1. As part of Australia’s contribution to that future, the Labor Government recognised the State of Palestine in September 2025, alongside the international community.
    1. Labor affirms the right to self-determination and the principles of sovereignty, justice and dignity for Palestinians, in accordance with relevant United Nations conventions and Security Council resolutions.
    1. Labor opposes the annexation of Palestinian territory and wants Israel to end its illegal settlement activity and occupation, to provide security for Palestine, Israel and the region.
    1. Labor urges the Government to prevent support being given to illegal settlement activity or extremist settler violence, and to impose further measures and sanctions as necessary.
    1. Labor unreservedly condemns terrorism and violent extremism, including acts committed by Hamas and other extremist groups. Labor reaffirms its belief that Israelis and Palestinians deserve to live free from terror and violence.
    1. Labor believes in international law and will defend it. Labor supports the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, and compliance with their binding decisions.Labor acknowledges the findings of the International Court of Justice in its advisory opinion on the legal consequences arising from the policies and practices of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem.
    1. Under international humanitarian law, Israel must comply with its obligations as an occupying power, including in relation to food and medical supplies for the Palestinian civilian population.Labor supports international demands for Israel to allow aid providers and non-government organisations to deliver lifesaving assistance to Palestinians in Gaza, in full cooperation with the United Nations.
    1. Australia has always opposed the death penalty as an inhumane and degrading form of punishment. Labor condemns recent Knesset legislation and other discriminatory laws targeting Palestinians.
    1. Labor stands with local communities affected by this generations-long conflict. It will support initiatives that bring Israelis and Palestinians closer together and advance a two-state solution based on internationally recognised borders.In the spirit of Labor values of respect, dignity and inclusion, Labor expresses its collective hope for a future in which the peoples of Palestine, Israel and the wider region can live in peace and security.
