Delegation urges NZ Government: ‘Not Yet, and Not Until’ on Palestinian statehood

A  delegation of Christian and community leaders has issued a stern warning to the New Zealand Government, urging it to adopt a stringent stance on Palestinian statehood.

Dr Ate Moala, Dr Sheree Trotter, Pastor Nigel Woodley, Bryce Turner, and Alfred Ngaro

They assert that any premature recognition risks rewarding terrorism and jeopardising peace efforts. The group—comprised of Pastor Nigel Woodley, Alfred Ngaro, Dr. Sheree Trotter, Dr. Ate Moala, and Bryce Turner—met with advisors to Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters, advocating for a “Not Yet, and Not Until” policy.

Their message was unequivocal:

  • Not yet, and not until all hostages are freed from Hamas.
  • Not yet, and not until Hamas is ousted from governing Gaza.
  • Not yet, and not until international criteria for statehood are satisfied.

“Recognition must follow peace, not reward violence,” warned Hon. Alfred Ngaro. He emphasised that New Zealand’s standing on the global stage hinges on its ability to remain resolute.

The delegation also cautioned that premature action could alienate New Zealand from crucial allies such as the United States. Dr. Sheree Trotter highlighted the necessity of engaging with Jewish, Christian, and wider communities domestically.

Advisors acknowledged the importance of establishing conditions before any recognition and confirmed plans for broader parliamentary discussions on the issue. “New Zealand should lead with principle: not yet, and not until the foundations for genuine peace are firmly established,” Pastor Nigel Woodley concluded.

No members of the Jewish community attended the meeting.
