Aug-31 Sydney: Jewish comedy returns to Bondi with Kosher Theatresports
Kosher Theatresports, an improvisational comedy show known for its blend of quick wit and Jewish humour, is set to return to the Bondi Pavilion Theatre on Sunday, August 31.
This marks the show’s comeback to Sydney’s comedy calendar after an eight-year absence, as part of the Bondi Theatre Company’s 2025 Winter Cabaret season. Kosher Theatresports is a Jewish-humour-themed spin-off from Sydney’s longest-running comedy show.
Since its inception in 1995 as part of the Sydney Jewish Arts Festival, Kosher Theatresports has carved out a unique niche, blending the quick-witted spontaneity of improvisational comedy with the rich tapestry of Jewish humour. Founder Geoff Sirmai describes it as “the ultimate night of Jewish comedy,” where the familiar “shtick” meets the unpredictable excitement of live, unscripted performance. Each scene is a unique, never-to-be-repeated experience, ensuring an evening of constant surprises and side-splitting moments.

Over the years, Kosher Theatresports has become an annual institution, drawing large crowds and featuring a stellar lineup of celebrity guests and judges. Past luminaries include Osher Gunsberg, Libbi Gorr, Bianca Dye, Tara Moss, Henry Roth, Mia Freedman, Don Lane, Larry Emdur, the Umbilical Brothers, Wil Anderson, Monica Trapaga, singer-songwriter Lior, and comedian Susie Youssef.
The show’s history is also marked by its unforgettable team names, as colourful and creative as the performances themselves. Audiences have cheered on favourites like “Shmux in Tux,” “Yentl as Anything,” “Rabbi-Proof Fence,” “The Schnozbournes,” the “Red Hot Chilli Shleppers,” and the all-female “Maccabee Divas.” Their improvised antics have spanned a hilarious range of genres, from Broadway parodies and Sci-Fi to Film Noir and even Jewish takes on Horror (or hora). This year, six teams will compete for the coveted “Kiddish Cup.”
Geoff Sirmai assures audiences that they can expect the same unpredictable laughs and Jewish-flavoured “shtick” that made the show a hit. “Theatresports is everyone’s favourite comedy game show,” he says. “So we say, when you’re on a good thing, add shtick to it!”
Beyond the laughter, audience members will have the chance to win exciting prizes, including theatre passes, holiday packages, and edible treats.
