V-Day commemoration

Over 100 members of the Russian-speaking community joined various community leaders in attending the V-Day commemoration at Waverley Park in Sydney. 

The event marked 71 years since the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces. It thus marked the end of World War II in Europe.

Speakers at the commemoration included the Ambassadors of Russia, Vladimir N. Morozov and Belarus Mr Viktar Shykh, as well as Sally Betts Mayor of Waverley, Rabbi Yoram Ulman spiritual leader of the Russian Jewish community and Allan Vidor President of JewishCare..

Allan Vidor acknowledged Russia’s loss of over 20 millions of its citizens and its significant role in bringing about the Nazi defeat. On a personal note Allan expressed his appreciation to Russia for liberating his father expressing JewishCare’s commitment to continue to provide support to the socially and economically disadvantaged members of the local Russian especially those living in the Waterloo and Redfern.
