Sydney police have detained two men after an imitation firearm was allegedly aimed at people outside a synagogue in the city’s eastern suburbs.
Officers rushed to Kiaora Road in Double Bay shortly after midday on Saturday following reports of a man in a car pointing what looked like a weapon towards the Chabad Double Bay synagogue, where worshippers had gathered.
Detectives located the vehicle in nearby Kings Cross, where they surrounded it and took the occupants into custody. The pair, aged 22 and 25, were arrested without incident, and an imitation pistol was recovered from the car.
Both men were transported to Surry Hills police station for questioning and remained in custody on Saturday night. No one was hurt in the incident, and investigators were still interviewing witnesses who were present outside the synagogue.
Charges are expected to be filed shortly. The event has stirred fresh unease in Sydney’s Jewish community, which has experienced repeated antisemitic incidents in recent years.
