Grounded in Jewish values, Gesher by UIA (United Israel Appeal) is about building bridges – ‘Gesher’, between people, across communities, and to Israel, through shared experiences, open conversations, and a strong sense of belonging.

Gesher is the engagement arm of UIA NSW.

Through its core pillars – connect, experience, and advocate – Gesher by UIA offers a space to participate, contribute, and feel connected- not just locally, but as part of a global Jewish story.

That’s exactly what makes the launch of the Healing Blanket Project in June a natural fit.

Founded by U.S.-based mental health coach Rona Lalezary, the Healing Blanket Project is a global initiative that invites individuals to create painted fabric squares, each carrying a personal message of hope, resilience, and healing.

Following October 7, Rona saw the global Jewish community suffering. As she travelled the world raising awareness of the critical mental health crisis facing Jewish communities, she realised that healing happens when we unite. She said: “I realised we needed something tangible to hold our stories. A way to physically wrap Am Yisrael.”

The squares will be stitched together into a powerful collective artwork – ’a healing blanket’ – to be displayed in a prominent museum in Jerusalem. It’s a tangible way for our community here in Australia to contribute to something deeply meaningful in Israel, while standing alongside Jewish communities around the world.

Each square represents a voice, a story, a moment of reflection. Rona explained: “This project is a tapestry of resilience crafted from the hearts and hands.”

What makes this project so powerful is the way it brings people together. Whether through community events, schools, or small-group gatherings, participants aren’t just creating art; they’re connecting with each other and a wider global community. It’s about showing up, sharing space, and knowing that wherever we are, we’re part of the same story.

These past few years have demonstrated the importance of connection. Gesher by UIA’s launch of this initiative is a reminder that even the smallest contribution can help strengthen the fabric of our global Jewish family.
