Alleged neo-Nazi ejected from One Nation fundraiser
A man with known neo-Nazi associations was issued with a move-on direction by police outside a Pauline Hanson fundraiser in Melbourne on Friday night after declaring support for the One Nation leader and shouting white supremacist slogans.
The fundraiser, attended by Pauline Hanson and Barnaby Joyce, was relocated from Casa Giorgio in Moonee Ponds to Canvas House in South Melbourne after the restaurant cancelled the booking following planned protests. One Nation maintained the move was due to strong ticket demand, while Victoria Police said they were aware of planned demonstrations but had not identified any specific threats.

Outside the venue, police detained 22-year-old Michael Nelson after he shouted “Hail Pauline Hanson” and described the senator as “the great white hope”. Video footage circulating online showed Nelson being handcuffed before he was issued with a move-on direction. Victoria Police later confirmed no arrests were made.
According to reports, Nelson also declared “Australia for the white man” while attempting to associate himself with Hanson and her party.
Nelson is a familiar figure within Australia’s far-right movement. Earlier this month, Nelson, Jacob Hersant, Nathan Bull and Ian Lomax were found guilty of offensive behaviour over the disruption of a Welcome to Country ceremony at Melbourne’s Anzac Day dawn service in 2025. The court heard that racist slogans were shouted during the ceremony, prompting widespread condemnation.

Hanson moved quickly to distance herself from Nelson and his views.
Speaking after the incident, she said she had never advocated a White Australia policy and rejected neo-Nazi ideology. Hanson said One Nation had no association with Nelson and did not support white supremacist beliefs.
The fundraiser attracted a sizeable police presence as between 30 and 50 anti-racism protesters gathered outside, chanting slogans against Hanson and One Nation. Some demonstrators shouted “shame”, while others carried signs accusing the party of racism and extremism. Reports also indicated some protesters directed abusive language at attendees and police officers.
Joyce condemned threats directed at Hanson and argued that political events should be able to proceed without intimidation.

“We’re not Nazis,” Joyce told reporters, adding that while people had a right to protest, threats and calls for violence were unacceptable.
The incident has reignited scrutiny of One Nation’s long and controversial history with race-related issues. Hanson first entered federal politics in 1996 after warning that Australia was at risk of being “swamped by Asians”, remarks that led to her disendorment by the Liberal Party but helped launch her political career. Since then, One Nation has repeatedly faced accusations of racism and xenophobia over its positions on immigration, multiculturalism and Islam.
Although Hanson has consistently rejected accusations that she or her party are neo-Nazis or white supremacists, critics argue that some of One Nation’s rhetoric has attracted support from elements of the far right. Hanson has maintained that her party supports a multicultural Australia and condemns racial hatred.
The South Melbourne fundraiser came as One Nation seeks to build support ahead of Victoria’s November state election.
