Within hours of the outbreak of the wildfires in Israel, JNF Australia has mobilised and launched an emergency wildfire appeal, which will directly support the firefighting efforts, replace and upgrade critical equipment, rehabilitate forests, and provide long-term ecological restoration to damaged areas.

Sarah Vanunu, Israel’s Emissary for JNF, told J-Wire: “As Israel faces one of the worst environmental disasters in its history, KKL-JNF teams are on the front lines – fighting flames, protecting communities, and safeguarding our precious forests.

The forests may burn in hours, but it takes generations to rebuild. This crisis demands a global response. As the Israel Emissary for KKL-JNF Australia, I call on our community to stand with Israel. Your support is urgently needed to replenish critical firefighting equipment and begin the long road to recovery and reforestation. Together, we can be part of that restoration.”

JNF Australia’s rapid mobilisation underscores the deep connection between the Australian Jewish community and Israel. Their proactive approach ensures that support reaches affected areas promptly, aiding in both immediate relief and long-term recovery.

The Jerusalem fires erupted on April 30, 2025, as Israel observed Yom HaZikaron rapidly spreading due to dry conditions and strong winds. The blazes forced the evacuation of multiple communities, injured over 40 individuals, and led to the closure of major highways, including Route 1 between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. The fires have scorched over 12,000 dunams of land, threatening homes, wildlife, and critical infrastructure.

In response to this national emergency, Israel mobilised extensive resources, deploying over 120 firefighting teams, military units, and aerial support. International assistance was also sought, with countries like Italy and Croatia sending firefighting aircraft to aid in containment efforts.

Amid this crisis, JNF Australia acted swiftly to support Israel. Recognising the urgency, they launched the Emergency Wildfire Appeal, enabling the Australian community to contribute directly to firefighting and recovery operations.
