Many significant achievements from the past year were outlined, including launching a new strategic plan entitled ‘Transforming for Our Future’, breaking ground on the $90 million Hannah & Daryl Cohen Family Building, the refurbishment of 36 community housing units in St Kilda East and partnering with numerous community organisations to strengthen and support the Victorian Jewish community.

With Jewish Care celebrating its 170thanniversary in 2018, CEO Bill Appleby reflected on the longevity of Jewish Care and its predecessor organisations.

Bill Appleby explained that the success of the organisation has been “due to the generous support it receives from the community and its ability to adapt and evolve to ensure it remains relevant to the current needs of the community.”

President of Jewish Care Mike Debinski also emphasised the organisation’s need to continue to adapt in constantly changing landscapes, stating, “In a growing competitive market, the success of Jewish Care will be our commitment to service quality and innovation.”

The Leo and Mina Fink Community Services Award, presented annually since 2010, was this year awarded to Henri Korn in recognition of his longstanding, voluntary contribution to Jewish Care in a range of roles for the past 13 years.

Susie Ivany, Professor Sharon Goldfeld, Frank Ajzensztat and Michael Schoenfeld were all re-elected to the Board of Governance.

A thought-provoking panel discussion, ‘Elder Abuse- Behind Closed Doors’, followed official proceedings. Facilitated by Stephen Thomas, expert speakers highlighted the prevalence of elder abuse and Victoria’s growing response to protecting and supporting those experiencing or at risk of elder abuse.

Guest speakers included Gerard Mansour, Commissioner for Senior Victorians and Ambassador for Elder Abuse Prevention; Ronda Held, CEO COTA Victoria; Dr Anita Frayman, Director of Elder Solutions Pty Ltd and Mary Anne Hunt, Chair of Elder Rights Advocacy (ERA) Victoria.
