DonateLife Thank You Day is a national day to honour all living and deceased organ and tissue donors and their families and to acknowledge their generosity, which saves and transforms the lives of others.

Today is the national day to acknowledge Australia’s organ and tissue donors and families that agreed to donation.

An initiative of the Organ and Tissue Authority (OTA), DonateLife Thank You Day provides an opportunity for all Australians to honour organ and tissue donors and their families by simply saying ‘thank you’.

Each year the lives of hundreds of Australians are saved and transformed through the generosity of living and deceased organ and tissue donors and their families that agreed to donation.

Organ and tissue donation is the ultimate gift, with just one organ and tissue donor able to improve the lives of more than ten people. At any one time, over 1,500 Australians are waiting for a life-saving transplant.

In the first nine months of this year, 1067 Australians received an organ transplant through the generosity of 372 deceased organ donors and their families. A further 182 living organ donors provided kidney or partial liver donations, and thousands more became tissue donors.

DonateLife Thank You Day is an opportunity for the Australian community to collectively say ‘thank you’ to the individuals and families, whose stories should inspire us all to register on the Australian Organ Donor Register and discuss our donation decisions.

Those who wish to express their gratitude for Australia’s organ and tissue donors are invited to join the DonateLife Thank You Day campaign by:

  • Creating a thank you video message and sharing it via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, using the #ThankYouDay hashtag
  • Registering as an organ donor at donatelife.gov.au
  • Starting a conversation or sharing your decision about organ donation with your family and friends.

There is a vast range of culturally appropriate and in-language resources available for diverse faith and cultural communities in Australia. For more information about DonateLife Thank You Day and how you can get involved, visit donatelife.gov.au/thank-you-day-resources.

Our rabbis have sanctioned the donation of organs are being halachically acceptable. Check with yours.
