Melbourne’s Beth Weizmann Jewish Community Centre has warmly welcomed the decision by Daniel Andrews’ State Government to supplement its funding of security upgrades at the centre by a further commitment of $500,000 in this year’s State Budget.

The Government has now committed $1million this year.

Sam Tatarka chair of Beth Weizmann said “The State Government led by Premier Daniel Andrews has been remarkably supportive of and sensitive to the needs of the Melbourne Jewish Community and in particular to the specific security challenges we face”. “Having delivered on the election promise of $500,000 made in 2014 in its first Budget, it has now supplemented that commitment by a further $500,000 to take into account the increase in scope and cost of the project as planningprogressed”. “This funding will help ensure the safety and security of our tenants and visitors and support our participation in multicultural Victoria”. “The Premier has also been a supportive advocate for matching funding from the Federal Government to enable this vital project to finally proceed and we continue to hope that the prolonged wait for the Federal Government to respond favourably will soon be over”.

Beth Weizmann Jewish Community Centre is the hub of the Melbourne Jewish Community and is located close to the demographic heart of the community it serves. Apart from providing secure office and meeting facilities for over 25 Jewish communal and charitable organisations it is also home to the Lamm Jewish Library of Australia, and the KOOK Community Kitchen. Hundreds of people visit and work in the centre each day and community festivals and events see large numbers enjoying the facilities we offer.
