The Good Wife

Paula and Jeff Houseman

Catching up with Paula Houseman, aged 56, wasn’t what I expected. I was all ready to hear the woes, the melodramatic outpouring of grief as the longtime suffering Maccabi wife. Nothing came. Paula is the lovely wife of Jeff Houseman, Chairman of Maccabi Australia International Games, “MAIGS” and newly appointed Board Member of Maccabi Australia. My whole story had been squashed in the first five minutes of the interview. I had no chance of being Jackie Collins and revealing all.

Paula has known Jeff since she was 15 years old and they met at a Maccabi carnival. One of those sentimental love affairs cemented in concrete right from the start. They married when she was 20 and as they say the rest is history. Maccabi has been part of their entire life. Jeff who is 58 years old, and a doting grandfather, has been involved in Maccabi since he was 13 years old. Paula knew she didn’t have a chance to compete with that sort of love and dedication and in her own words, “To Jeff sport is his religion. I would never take that away from him. Jeff is so community minded and on the contrary, I have encouraged him throughout his life to face his challenges. Along the way, he has been very unsure about taking Maccabi roles and each time I pushed him because I knew once he faced his fears he would feel empowered.” Passitivity is the enemy and Paula is a big believer about living outside your comfort zone and has gone back to study herself studying a Post Graduate Hons. in Health Sociology. For Paula it is very easy, “We support each other in our passions. Sport and Maccabi are Jeff’s and writing and health in society are mine. Jeff is a great leader he knows how to delegate and always puts his family first.” Paula added: “If I had to sum up Jeff it would be in four words: tenacity, commitment, patience and perseverance. Valuable qualities that inspire me.”

When I asked Paula what she loves about Jeff so much, her reply was simple, “His outrageous sense of humour, strong family values, he’s easy-going and he’s a good person.”

Maccabi announces new international games in 2010

August 27, 2009 by

After the inspirational performances of our Aussie athletes at Maccabiah last month Sydney has something up its sleeve to show the world. Jeff Houseman, Chairman of the Maccabi Australia International Games, “MAIGS” gives Maccabi News the scoop on the International Sporting Event coming to our shores next year.
“Yes, Sydney is set to explode, literally, with MAIGS falling over New Years Eve. The hub of the activity for all athletes will be at Darling Harbour and of course the amazing NYE fireworks that Maccabi NSW has organized especially for all our members will set the stage”, Jeff laughs. Families will be asked to host a Shabbaton Dinner on Friday 24th December 2010 and the Aussie hospitality will be something our overseas guests will always remember.
“When all the Maccabi State bodies’ band together to represent Australia in a major sporting event it becomes something very special. As an organization we just grow and that excites me beyond words. Clubs really step up to the challenge of staging a world class event and you really see Maccabi perform at its best.” Jeff goes on to say, “After being involved in MAIGS 2006, I had such a positive experience that when Harry Procel, President of Maccabi Australia, approached me about becoming Chairman I knew it was right. Even my wife, Paula could see how excited I was during 2006 and she encouraged me to take the position.”
This event will be open to males and females in three categories: Youth born: 1992/1993, Open and Masters.
Jeff is not the only one with fond memories of MAIGS 2006. Jeanne Futeran recently recalled her MAIGS time fondly. Jeanne Futeran, 68, president of Maccabi World Union (MWU), in 2006 at age 64, was here in Australia from South Africa visiting her son. Jeanne reminisces, “Australia had its regional Maccabi Games a couple of years ago. They were short of swimmers in the Masters side so my son, Max said: “Hey Mom, you should come and swim. I landed up with a gold, silver and bronze medal. My grandchildren were so excited; they loved it.”
Sports on offer are: Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Football, Futsal, Golf, Hockey, Judo, Karate, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Ocean Swimming, Softball, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Ten Pin Bowling, Tennis, Triathlon, Touch Football and Water Polo. The majority of the sports will be held at Sydney Olympic Park.
For all details contact Jeff Houseman on 0438-692-810 or register your interest at maig2010@maccabi.com.au or email Jeff directly at yorkstat@bigpond.com
