New South Wales Premier Barry O’Farrell has visited Sydney’s Great Synagogue…an iconic heritage building in the centre of the city.

Rabbi Jeremy Lawrence told J-Wire that the Premier showed particular interest in the historical aspect of the congregation.

Board Member and Treasurer Ros Fisher showed Premier O’Farrell the congregation’s marriage register dating back to the 1830s. The 11th entry was the marriage of her ancestors…early settlers in the budding colony.

The marriage register dates back to the time when the congregation was based in Bridge and York streets. The current building was dedicated in 1878.

Rabbi Lawrence added that the Premier had never visited the synagogue before and found it “extremely interesting”.
