On the virus front, there has been good news with promising trials of COVID vaccines overseas and locally.

Last winter recorded record rainfalls and as a result Lake Kinneret filled to its highest level in many years. Over the long hot summer evaporation and usage depletes the lake and thus winter rains are always eagerly prayed for and anticipated.

Although Israel’s desalination of water has now alleviated a previous total dependency on water from the lake it is still important that water levels do not fall below red lines. If this was to happen salinity would rise and fish stocks would be imperilled as well as other marine life.

Therefore as the first of this year’s winter storms arrived and rain fell in copious quantities, Israelis rejoiced that their prayers had been answered. Let us hope for another bountiful winter.
