Morry Frenkel speaks with Anita Frayman, co-curator (with Esther Gyorki) of Buchenwald Ball – 80 Years Dancing in Freedom, and Andrew Harris, whose photographs are featured in the exhibition.

Anita, the daughter of Buchenwald Boy, Joe Kaufman, provides fascinating details of the history of the group of adolescent Buchenwald concentration camp survivors who came to Melbourne and the yearly commemoration of liberation held on April 11th, which is followed by the Ball. Andrew describes how he came to capture the images and the effect this involvement has impacted on him. The exhibition, Buchenwald Ball – 80 Years Dancing in Freedom, is at the Jewish Museum of Australia, 26 Alma Road St Kilda, until 06 July, 2025. Further information and ticketing can be found at: https://www.jewishmuseum.com.au/event/buchenwald-ball-80-years-dancing-in-freedom/ and click on the What’s On link.
