A message for Pesach from Anthony Albanese

For the first two nights of Passover, Jewish people across our nation and the world will once more gather around the Seder table and, like generation upon generation before them, recall the story of the Exodus from Egypt.

As you take your place at the table this year, you will again recall the powerful story that Passover has handed down to you through the centuries. It is a story of resilience and strength, of liberation and endurance, of triumph over adversity, of sacrifice, redemption and hope. It is a story that is at once ancient and timeless.

What ultimately emerges is a reminder of why the story of Passover is such a powerful source of reassurance, and why it will always be told – in good times and in bad.

This is the first Seder since the antisemitic attack at Bondi Beach, and a great many hearts will be filled with pain for those so cruelly taken from us, and for those who live with the burden of that darkest day.

As our nation continues to contend with the terrible events of last December, the escalation of conflict in the Middle East brings increased fear and concern for those endangered by war. Amid the shadows, the message of Passover is a towering beacon.

The Seder meal is a reminder that in every generation we must hold close our traditions, community and history. This year, I honour that unbreakable spirit of the Jewish people here in Australia and around the world.

As you sit down to mark the start of these sacred days may you find comfort and strength together. And above all, may you find joy.

Chag Kasher V’Sameach.

The Hon Anthony Albanese MP
