87-year-old Charles Zentai is to appeal to the full bench of the Federal Court in an attempt to avoid extradition to Hungary to face charges of beating an-18-year old Jew to death in 1944.

Justice John Gilmour yesterday granted the Perth resident an extension of  bail until May 11 in order for a full medical report to be prepared.

In the meantime, a legal team will contest Justice Gilmour’s decision that Zentai is eligible for extradition to Hungary where he is wanted for the death of Peter Balazs, a Jewish teenager pulled off a Budapest tram in 1944 for not wearing the mandatory yellow Star of David. He was beaten to death in an army barracks. Balazs had been living in Budapest under Swiss protection.

From Jerusalem Nazi-hunter Efraim Zuroff told J-Wire: “There is no option but to let this matter run its natural course within the Australian legal system. He is milking it for all he can…but hopefully, justice will prevail and he will be able to defend himself before the appropriate authorities in Hungary.”
