The defending champions took on Newington College, in an epic Grand Final of the NSW Combined Independent Schools competition at Sydney’s Valentine Park last night, before a crowd of more than 500 spirited supporters.

Ryan Blumberg scored early for Moriah, with Newington quickly bringing the tally to 1-1. By half-time Newington was up 2-1 and scored again early in the 2nd half to bring it to 3-1.  Blumberg is a soccer star in the making and has been accepted by the high profile Nike academy.

In a stunning come-back, first Jordan Koton, then Ryan Blumberg kicked successive goals, levelling the game at 3-3 on the full-time buzzer.

The deal was sealed at 4-3 for Moriah by Gidon Zimerman, just a few minutes into extra-time.

The NSWCIS Football Cup is a knock-out competition that is contested amongst some of the state’s proudest Football schools including GPS giants such as Cranbrook, SHORE, Barker, The Kings School and Sydney Grammar.

Moriah is only the second school to win the Cup twice.
