This presentation explains how Russian-speaking Jews adapted their identity in Melbourne. Former Soviet Jews immigrated to Australia after decades of official regime discrimination that almost completely destroyed Jewish religion and culture in its public sphere. After living in Australia in proximity to thriving Jewish communities for several decades, how have Russian-speaking Jews adapted their identity? The latest findings about Russian-speaking Jews in Melbourne is presented based on data from the Gen17 survey and interviews.
Emmanuel Gruzman is a final year PhD candidate at the Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation at Monash University and recipient of the Jewish Care Victoria and Zeleznikow scholarship. He attained a Rabbinical Degree in Israel and speaks seven languages. His research project is about the settlement experiences, adaptation patterns and identity formation of Jews from the former Soviet Union in Melbourne. He finds people and their multiple identities fascinating.
