A case has been running in the Federal Court brought by five former students of Brighton Secondary College. Evidence has been led of a shocking history of antisemitic conduct at the school. This week, JCCV President Daniel Aghion KC attended court to show support for the former students, together

A spokesperson said: “The JCCV stands in support of the five brave students who have brought this case. The outcome is a matter for the Court, and the JCCV trusts in the Australian judicial system. But regardless, the community says “never again”. Antisemitism is abhorrent and should be stamped out wherever it occurs.”

The JCCV has run a training program for staff at Brighton Secondary College to help them understand, identify and respond to antisemitism. The program was delivered in partnership with Courage to Care, the Ark Centre and the Jewish Museum of Australia.

The program was well received, and as a result, the JCCV, with our community partners, is working to roll the program out more widely across the State school system. it is critically important that antisemitism training be implemented across the State school system, so that teachers and administrators have the knowledge and tools to combat antisemitism if or when it arises.

JCCV President Daniel Aghion KC said: “I attended court to listen to the evidence and to show the Victorian Jewish community’s support for the students. The family have requested, if you are able to do so, to attend Court and show your support.

The JCCV’s absolute priority is protecting and promoting the ability of all Jewish Victorians to live safely and freely practice our religion and traditions. The JCCV will always stand in opposition to antisemitism and support those who have been vilified or experienced prejudice for the simple fact of being Jewish.”
