Pesach preparations were well underway in Sydney last week with management and staff from fifteen Coles supermarkets receiving a rapid-fire education about the significant Jewish festival.

Avremi Joseph briefs Coles' staff

Coles supermarkets in Jewish areas already carry a more than comprehensive stock of Kosher products…but that stock has now been enhanced with KosherLePesach goods on a scale larger than the food store has ever carried before.

Not satisfied that simply carrying the Pesach stock would suffice, Coles executives William Kay and Mark Hawley headed a seminar at which Rabbi Mendel Kastel told store staff the story of Pesach and the reasons for having specially prepared food for the festival. He was backed up later in the day by Jewish House’s Avremi Joseph who went into more detail about the products themselves and fielded questions.

Jewish House CEO Rabbi Mendel Kastel told J-Wire: “Coles are one of our supporters and we have initiated many joint projects together. I am thrilled to see them offering the community such a massive range of products for Pesach.” Coles’ William Kay added:Coles is now educating staff on the history and religious significance of the Passover festival to serve the Jewish market even better than we have in the past. ”

Following the Q&A, Coles staff, many for the first time, sampled Passover products with gefilte fish a serious topic of discussion. Coles have not only stocked their stores but now have management for whom Pesach is no longer a mystery.

Around 25 Coles branches will stock KosheLePesach goods this year…and increase of seven from 2011. In Melbourne Coles have in total 21 stores stocking Kosher goods, Sydney  20, Adelaide 3, Brisbane 1, QLD Regional 3, Canberra 1 and Perth 3. Not all will have KosherLePesach goods.
