With a focus on human rights issues around Australia and throughout the world, the focus of the event will be to deepen attendees’ understanding of how the Jewish community is able to develop a deeper engagement with refugees, First Nations and people with disabilities.

Well known in Australia for his human rights work with refugees, immigration detainees and indigenous Australians, Mr Newhouse co-founded the National Justice Project in 2016. As the Project’s principal solicitor, his work involves using the law to support and advance social justice and human rights in Australia.

For his work, Mr Newhouse was awarded Stand Up’s Ron Castan Humanitarian award in 2017 and the Australian Lawyers Alliance Civil Justice Award in 2019.

“Given the history of the holocaust and the experience of the Jewish community, I believe we have an obligation to work with marginalised communities throughout Australia,” Mr Newhouse said.

“We all assume that everyone gets a fair go in our country, but that’s not the case, and there’s much more we can do together.

I’m looking forward to having a discussion about what we as a community can do and untap the potential we have to fight for social justice.”

This in-person event promises to provide attendees with engaging and genuine insight as to the plight of marginalised communities, as well as to the positive work that can be done through advancing social justice and human rights issues at home and abroad.

“We welcome George Newhouse to the congregation, and trust that his expertise and humanity will give members of our community the awareness his body of work has allowed him to accumulate over time,” said Emanuel’s Senior Rabbi, Jeffrey B. Kamins.
