Burger Centre to become part of the Monte
JewishCare and Montefiore have announced that after nearly two decades of joint ownership, Montefiore will become the sole owner and operator of The Burger Centre.
Since opening its doors in 1991, The Burger Centre has been a welcoming, vibrant hub for older people in both the Jewish and broader community. Its founding was made possible through the vision of community leaders and the generosity of donors, particularly from David ‘Zoli’ Burger whose legacy lives on in the Centre’s name.
In 2007, The Burger Centre (East) relocated to a purpose-built facility on Montefiore’s Randwick campus, helping the Centre meet the changing needs of its clients. This move marked the beginning of a successful partnership between JewishCare and Montefiore, who have co-managed the Centre for the past 18 years. In 2021, that partnership expanded further when Club Monte at Hunters Hill transitioned into The Burger Centre (North), extending its reach and impact across Sydney.
Both organisations have agreed that Montefiore is well placed to take on sole responsibility moving forward. With both centres located on Montefiore campuses and a strong operational understanding in place, the transition is expected to be smooth. Importantly, the change in ownership will not affect the day-to-day experience of clients. The same programs, services, and dedicated team will remain in place.
“This is a natural next step for The Burger Centre,” said representatives from both organisations in a joint statement. “Montefiore has a deep understanding of the Centre’s culture and operations. JewishCare and Montefiore are aligned in our mission, and this decision reflects our mutual goal to provide high-quality, consistent care for older people in our community.”
The organisations would like to extend their gratitude to David Balkin, who has served as the Independent Chair of the Joint Operating Committee, along with current committee members Gary Inberg, Robert Orie, Lawson Broad, Michael Rosmarin, Toby Hammerman, and Jenna Baskin. They expressed their appreciation to the past and present Boards of JewishCare and Montefiore, as well as the former members of the Joint Operating Committee, whose support has been vital in shaping The Burger Centre.
Zoli Burger’s wife Diane Burger whose support has been invaluable and the many staff members, whose work has been central to The Burger Centre’s success have been acknowledged.
“This transition marks the end of a strong formal partnership, but not the end of our collaboration. Both organisations will continue to work together to support the evolving needs of our community, now and into the future.”
The changeover of ownership will take place on July1.
