The runner up is Edward Lichtig, a year 8 student from Melbourne’s Leibler Yavneh College.

The 2013 Australian Bible Quiz, organised by the Zionist Federation of Australia, was recently held in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth.

The annual competition attracted 24 participants from Perth (Carmel School), Sydney (Moriah College and Kesser Torah) and Melbourne (Beth Rivkah Ladies’ College and Leibler Yavneh College)…the largest number of participants in several years.

Participants sat the national quiz in their respective states under the supervision of ZFA representatives.

Sara has won a free ticket to Israel as well as a place on the Tanach Camp, joining competitors from around the world, and the opportunity to compete in the World Bible Quiz (Chidon HaTanach) which will be televised live in Israel on Yom Ha’atzmaut next year. Edward has secured a place at the camp and the competition. Chidon HaTanach is run by the Education Department of the Israel Defense Forces.

Yasmin Schwarz, the 2012 Quiz Winner travelled to Israel and came sixth in the 2013 World Bible Quiz – Diaspora division. Yasmin said: “It was an experience like no other and I am so grateful to ZFA for allowing me to partake in a once in a life time experience.”

Yasmin described her experience in Israel: “It is amazing, you have 58 people from 26 countries meeting in one city (Jerusalem) for Tanach….it was amazing to learn with each other… From travelling around Jerusalem, the Old City, countless visits to the Kotel, The city of David, Her Herzl, Yad Vashem to the Shabbat organised by one family it was amazing.”

ZFA Executive Director Ginette Searle said: “It is fantastic to see so many young people competing this year. The dedication and talent of these young people is inspiring. I commend each and every participant for the study and commitment they’ve undertaken to be a part of this project.  To Sara and Edward, Mazal Tov – we wish you a wonderful experience on the camp and the best of luck as you represent Australia on the world stage.”

The International Diaspora Quiz is based on 400 chapters of Tanach and the winner receives a scholarship to Machon Lev, the Jerusalem College of Technology. We thank Shira Bloch, the chief examiner and test writer, who was herself a former winner of the Australian Bible Quiz and a high ranking competitor in the world quiz.
