A Yom Ha’azmaut message from Peter Dutton

Eighteen months after the horrors of October 7, it’s still hard to fathom the sheer scale of brutality unleashed by Hamas.

The grief remains raw, the memories vivid, and the imperative to speak with moral clarity stronger than ever.

On that day of depravity, we saw evil incarnate. Hamas acted with glee. Innocent civilians were butchered. Children were murdered. Women were raped. Families were burned alive. More Jews were slaughtered on October 7 than on any single day since the Holocaust. To this day, Hamas still holds hostages.

As we mark the 77th Anniversary of Israel’s Independence on 1 May 2025, this year’s Yom Ha’atzmaut is a powerful commemoration of statehood and a profound statement of survival, resilience and hope.

Yom Ha’atzmaut is a time to honour the Jewish people’s ancient and unbroken connection to the land of Israel – and their extraordinary journey through millennia of exile, persecution and renewal. It’s a time to reaffirm Israel’s right to exist, to defend itself, and to flourish as a beacon of democracy in the Middle East.

It’s a time to reject the propaganda and false equivalence that emboldens antisemitism. And it’s a time to condemn the evil of Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis – and the Iranian regime that sponsors them all – and to recognise the threat they pose not only to Israel, but to the values of civilisation. Peace will only be possible when those who glorify terror are discredited and defeated.

In the face of a disturbing global rise in antisemitism, the Coalition stands with the Jewish people – in Israel, in Australia, and around the world – with pride, with conviction, and with unflinching solidarity.

As Israel celebrates 77 years of independence, may this day renew our shared commitment to truth, to peace, and to the defence of all that is good and free.

On behalf of the Coalition, I send my best wishes to Australia’s resilient 100,000-strong Jewish community on this important day.

  3. Liat Kirby says:

This is a fine speech. Informed and, I think, sincere. It’s a pity the polls are so heavily against Dutton. I never thought I’d see the day I’d be on his side in an election, but the day has come.
