Ed Avner is a fervent Jewish Australian who runs an eponymous Jewish-themed bakery in Sydney’s Surry Hills.

He was the subject of significant antisemitic actions following the October 7, 2023 Hamas atrocities.

His bakery restaurant on the corner of Bourke and Albion Streets has been and continues to be graffitied.

So, Avner has been creating some graffiti himself. Ed has been writing the names of every IDF member killed in action since October 7, 2023, on the front of his bakery.

His attitude is unusually forgiving and tolerant. When he was attacked by people throwing dog faeces in his face, his reaction was to offer his freshly made ruggeleh. That must certainly trump the Christian “turn the other cheek” doctrine.

When Ed opened his iconic bakery in February 2024, his plan was to provide both the Jewish and non-Jewish communities with spectacular kosher food. Everything he makes and bakes is kosher.

Unfortunately, the support he had hoped for from the Jewish community has not been as strong as he had forecast, with feedback complaining of the difficulty of finding parking and the location being not near other venues frequented by the Eastern suburban Jewish shoppers.

One of his loyal customers told J-Wire: “As a result, Avner is reconsidering his business model. It will be a pity to lose the unique experience of his pastrami and salmon bagels, his delicious cakes and pastries, combined with his philosophical discussions displaying his fervent Jewish passion.”

Sadly, almost every day, Ed Avner =daubs yet another name.
