The Young Jewish Leadership of Melbourne (YJLM) and OnKew joined forces for their second upscale cocktail party for Melbourne young adults, this time aimed at bringing young lawyers and businesspeople together for a social and networking event at the award winning CBD cocktail lounge “The Little Red Pocket”.

Co-Director of YJLM, Ilana Silver was thrilled that there was such a high attendance at this niche event: “We attracted so many new faces to Cocktails In the City, and the crowd was a mix of lawyers and people who work in the city, many of whom said they rarely have time to socialise during the week because of their hectic work demands,” she shared.

Unique about the event was the lawyers’ ability to obtain one Law CPD point for their attendance, and Colin Golvan, a successful QC specialising in Copyright and Trade Practices law, presented in a style that appealed to both lawyers and non-lawyers alike.

A former journalist, author, playwright and now a successful barrister, Mr Golvan gave over an animated and humorous presentation on the role of barristers, sharing some of the more colourful experiences and cases he had throughout his career.

Most interesting was his experience dealing with the copyright of Aboriginal traditional art, where he was flown to meet tribal leaders in Arnhem Land, in a case spearheaded by award-winning painter Lin Onus.

This is YJLM and OnKew’s second collaboration, the first of which was a cocktail event featuring guest speaker Member of Parliament Josh Frydenberg, who spoke to a packed crowd at the Aviary Lounge in Abbotsford, earlier this year.

“The importance of quality young adult events cannot be over-emphasised and I couldn’t have been more pleased with how our OnKew launch event with YJLM was received at both our February and May events,” said Rabbi Stephen Boroda, head of Kew Hebrew Congregation.

Since their Melbourne launch in December 2013, an event collaborated with Young JBD, YJLM has achieved a successful stream of collaborative Melbourne events strategically targeting young adults.

YJLM and Young JBD have teamed up again to hold a large upscale cocktail event called “The White Party” on August 9th in celebration of Tu B’Av, and has several more events planned for 2014.

Ilana concluded: “The YJLM team is thrilled to get positive feedback and requests for more events from our event attendees, and we are excited to continue our hard work in attracting a demographic that has been largely uninvolved in any Jewish events or even the community, something that the Gen08 survey clearly revealed, and more recently the US-based Pew Study.

The White Party takes place August 9th, 8.30 at Spirit Station Pier and tickets are available online from www.WhitePartyMelb.Eventbrite.com
