Over 2,800 members of the Sydney Jewish community have joined Hakoah as pre-opening members two years before the club is set to open.

Steven Lowy

President Steven Lowy has expressed immense gratitude to them, saying: “Thank you to the community for believing in this project so strongly. Over 2,800 members and 200 major donors is a clear display that the vision of Hakoah at White City is eagerly embraced by the community. We are particularly pleased to see so many of the younger generation supporting the club.”

Hakoah made significant strides this year by receiving the necessary Development Approvals, engaging with communal organisations who will use Hakoah and raising over $70 million dollars in philanthropic support including pre-opening memberships and $15 million from state and federal government grants. The club is nearing completion of the financial support needed and is getting ready to finalise the construction and other necessary legal agreements, and approve the sale of the White City site to the new not for profit entity – Sydney Jewish Community Centre.

“We are confident the project will begin in early 2022 following a meeting of members next February to formally push the go button.” explained Lowy.

He added: “We will keep the membership packages open for just a short period longer to give those who may have missed out an opportunity to join.

These pre-opening memberships are not expected to be available for much longer, so if you haven’t already, please show your support for the project and make sure you take advantage of the great value options currently available by joining as soon as possible.”

The plans for the membership campaign originally included a range of in- person events. Owing to Covid restrictions the entire campaign had to be run on social media and on Zoom. Lowy expressed gratitude to Hakoah’s dedicated board and team who went above and beyond to ensure the community was engaged and energised around the bold vision for Hakoah at White City.

Anyone who is interested in staying up to date with Hakoah’s progress can sign up on the Hakoah website: www.hakoah.com.au and follow @hakoahclub on social media.

A statement fe0m Hakoah reads: “The long held dream of a vibrant Jewish communal hub should soon be a reality. The work now begins to build this world class facility and to prepare for the incredible programming and activities that will take place at the centre, expected to open in the second half of 2023.”
