smFollowing the lead of Shir Madness Sydney that started in 2010, the festival brings together 30 acts on 5 stages, over 9 hours in and around the Classic Cinema/Kadimah Hall and a stage in Gordon Street Elsternwick. Festival Directors Deborah Conway and Willy Zygier are curating an event that brings together the diversity, richness, breadth of talent and explorations of genres from Singer/songwriters to Broadway, from Cantorial to Jazz, from Ambient to Yiddish folk songs, from Klezmer to Electronic Dance Music.

Conway says, “this will be a festival that acknowledges the immense contributions the Jews have made to music in all its glorious variety. Shir Madness will highlight the very best in contemporary and traditional Jewish music; we want audiences to be transported, to be inspired, to listen, to dance and to be dazzled by the choices offered in the program. Think WOMAD or Port Fairy with a Jewish bent.” She adds, “ it’s going to be a day where we will combine brilliant sound, an amazing array of performers and diverse Jewish cultural arts. As Shir Madness has become a treasured fixture in Sydney, we see it becoming a much-anticipated event in Melbourne.”

Screen-Shot-2015-07-17-at-11.45.49-amConfirmed acts include Tal Ben Ari from Tel Aviv, Zusha direct from NYC (#9 on Billboard Magazine World Music Chart), The Portnoy Brothers from Israel, Deborah Conway & Willy Zygier, George Dreyfus AM, Tin Pan Orange, Monsieur Camembert, Lucky Oceans, Simon Tedeschi, Luke Howard with Leonard Grigoryan, The Alter Jazz Ensemble, Rita Satch, Zourouna, Saray Iluminado, Robbie Avenaim, Josh Levy, Ruth Roshan & Tango Noir, Klezmeritis, Karen Feldman. Leonie Cohen Trio, Zourouna, Stiletto Sisters and Honeysmack.

The “Song of Songs” event will feature well-known Melbourne singers performing their favourite song by a Jewish composer. Performers include Archie Roach, Kate Ceberano, Shane Howard, Emily Lubitz, David Hobson, Ron Peno, Jeff Lang, Rebecca Barnard, Hue Blanes, Linda Bull, Tim Rogers, Kutcha Edwards and Deborah Conway.

We have asked 15 of our favourite & most treasured Melbourne singers to pick their favourite song by a Jewish composer that might have moved them, excited them or had personal meaning for them.  Jewish composers have been pivotal in Twentieth Century popular music. Backed by the Band of Bands led by Melbourne bass legend Jonathan Zion this is an event not to be missed. We invite all Melbournians to join us in this celebration- it is time for Melbourne to have a Jewish music festival!”
