UIA Australia is to launch its inaugural crowdfunding Giving Day on Thursday 5 November using Charidy’s online platform.

Funds raised will support Amigour, Israel’s leading operator of public and sheltered housing facilities for the elderly, including Holocaust Survivors and new immigrants (Olim). For 24 hours only all donations will be matched.

Amigour is a key project supported by UIA Australia in partnership with Keren Hayesod-UIA and the Israeli Government. In celebration of UIA’s 100th anniversary, the first-of-its-kind national Giving Day provides a rare opportunity for our communities across Australia to make a difference and ensure every elderly person in Israel has a place to live their life in dignity.

An additional unique feature of the campaign is that all funds raised in Australia will be matched by the Israeli Government.

Currently Amigour provides 6,000 apartments in 57 homes for about 7,500 residents. But the need is constantly growing with about 27,000 elderly still lacking proper housing.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the vulnerability of the elderly population and urgency to provide them with safe housing. Approximately 22% of the COVID-19 deaths have been people aged 80 and over in Israel. Lack of proper social housing is just one reason for this, along with poverty, social isolation and hunger.

There are approximately 180,000 Holocaust Survivors living in Israel, 1 in 3 who live below the poverty line. The construction of a new Amigour Home in Ashkelon, southern Israel with 471 apartments will provide a home for vulnerable elderly in need.

“We hope every member of our community will be a part of this incredible opportunity. 24 hours. Matched donations. An amazing project to support. Donors from across Australia all coming together to support some of our most vulnerable People in Israel,” UIA CEO Yair Miller said.
