Rabbi Ben Elton and his wife Hinda met Prince Charles at a garden party in Sydney and answered questions from His Royal Highness about Sydney’s Jewish community.
Rabbi Elton, who is the spiritual leader of Sydney’s The Great Synagogue, told J-Wire: “It was a great honour to attend the Governor’s garden party for Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall. The invitation shows the high regard for the Jewish community in this city and it was an honour to represent it.The Prince was keen to know the size and the strength of our community and I was happy to tell him we are doing well. Both the Prince and the Governor send us their best wishes.”
Before the garden party at Government House in Sydney, Manchester-born Rabbi Elton told J-Wire the closest he had come to meeting royalty before was when he was among hundreds of students at Cambridge University present during a visit by the Queen.
He added: “We met NSW Governor David Hurley when he attended an ANZAC service at the Cenotaph.”
It was also the first time Rabbi Elton met NSW Premier Mike Baird who warmly welcomed him and wife Hinda to New South Wales.
