The  CEO of Sydney’s The Jewish House has taken part in an international conference dealing with substance abuse.

Rabbi Mendel Kastel

Rabbi Mendel Kastel worked with rabbis from the US and Europe at the conference in Wernersville, Pennsylvania, on the mutual understanding of the effect substance abuse has on families.

Kastel told the conference: “In Sydney we’re finding more people are willing to talk about their problems and seek help. I think that recognising the importance of spirituality to overcome addictions is a growth industry. It may not have been stressed in the past for reasons of privacy or shame or not wanting to create a community stigma.

The conference was told many Americans were in denial and the traditional use of humour to allay problems is being replaced by drug abuse.
