NSW Shadow Treasurer and NSW Parliamentary Friends of Israel deputy chair Walt Secord has attacked those behind a campaign to remove Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg from Parliament on the basis that his stateless refugee Jewish mother was born in Hungary.

Addressing the NSW Parliament, Mr Secord labelled the claims as “scurrilous”, “offensive” and “deeply rooted in antisemitism”.

In a rare bipartisan speech, Mr Secord defended Mr Frydenberg saying his mother, Erica Strausz-Frydenberg was “stateless” due to the Shoah.

“She arrived in Australia at the age of seven on a ship in December 1950 after being in a refugee camp. His mother was made “stateless” by the Nazis and Hungarian collaborators for a sole reason: It was because she was Jewish. They robbed her of her citizenship. It is absolutely disgusting to claim that she had Hungarian citizenship when it was ripped away from her and her family during the Shoah.”

“I believe the dual citizenship claims against Josh Frydenberg are deeply rooted in antisemitism. I also agree with Scott Morrison, who has expressed similar views.”

Mr Secord said the push reminded him of the disgusting so-called “birthers” movement in the United States in 2008 – who attacked then-US presidential candidate Barack Obama.

“Those were the odious ultra-right wingers who claimed that former United States President Barack Obama was born in Kenya rather than Hawaii and was therefore ineligible to serve in the White House. The claims were outright lies. The birthers attacks on Barack Obama were based in racism. At first, they demanded that he release his birth certificate and, when it was subsequently released, they then claimed it was a forgery. Put simply, the attacks on Josh Frydenberg are in a similar vein.”

Well done Walt Secord…..it’s great to both read and hear that a hard working member of the ALP has spoken out about the anti Semitic treatment of the Australian Treasurer Josh Frydenberg with regards the high court appeal that he’s needing to prove that he’s eligible to sit in the Australian Parliament…..what a disgrace that he should be targeted by a known anti Semite….why has this peace of scum waited so many years to make this challenge whilst Josh has been the member for Kooyong for 3 terms???
