Jewish families from Poland who lost their homes and belongings during the Holocaust have been waiting for more than 70 years for restitution or compensation…but according to a report in The Australian, the Holocaust victims are out-maneuvering and stealing $65 billion from the Polish people”.

The Australian Polish community has strongly voiced its opinion against the speaking visit to Australia and New Zealand by Polish radio presenter Stanislaw Michalkiewicz, described by The Australian as being ‘an extremist”.

The president of the Australian Institue of Polish Affairs Aleksander Gancarz told The Australian that Michalkiewicz’s public statements in the past  “breach the boundaries of the common moral code and civility. They are extreme and offensive, especially to the Jewish community.”

The Australian also reports that the radio station for which Michalkiewicz works has “drawn condemnation from the Vatican” for broadcasting his comments on Jewish compensation.

Michalkiewicz speaks to his audiences only in Polish. The events are reported to be in church halls and community centres.

The Australian also reported that Michalkiewicz has accused Holocaust victims seeking restitution or compensation for property seized during WWII of “stealing from Poles”.

The Executive Council of Australian Jewry co-CEO Peter Wertheim told J-Wire:“The nonsense spouted by Michalkiewicz is symptomatic of the recent rise in the political fortunes of ultra-nationalist, antisemitic parties in Europe, and the old traditions of antisemitism which they have brought to the surface.

We applaud our friends in the mainstream Polish community in Australia, through the Australian Institute of Polish Affairs, for dissociating themselves from and denouncing such detestable hatreds, and their importation into Australia.”

Nasja Polonia Australia is reported to have paid Michalkiewicz’s flights and its president told The Australian the condemnation of him “was a result of the strong Jewish lobby”.

The Australian Institute of Polish Affairs (AIPA) wrote to the ECAJ saying “we are equally concerned and alarmed by Michalkiewicz’s provocative and offensive statements. We are shocked by his visit.

We have been warning the leaders of all major Polish community organisations about Mr Michalkiewicz. He is notorious in Poland for his extreme and offensive statements –most listed on YouTube (only in Polish) – and he is notorious in Australia, where he spoke in the past.

It is embarrassing and alarming that, in spite of this notoriety, he was invited to Australia (and New Zealand) again to give a series of public presentations.

We also hope this embarrassing visit does not spoil the good relations with the Jewish community our Institute has maintained since its formation in 1991.”
