The Jewish Community Council of Victoria has confirmed Executive member Daniel Aghion as the new JCCV President in a unanimous vote of support at last week’s Executive meeting.

Aghion is a committed communal supporter, also currently serving as ECAJ Honorary Secretary.

Daniel Aghion is a barrister who received the Ron Merkel QC award from the Victorian Bar in 2014 for his pro bono advice and advocacy in respect of homelessness and elder law.

Following a period of uncertainty with unexpected changes in leadership since the November 2020 AGM, Daniel is confident he can offer effective leadership and together with the existing talented Executive team and Executive Director, redefine the goals of the JCCV. He said: “Strengthening relationships with our Affiliates, discussing personally their challenges and working collaboratively to add value will be an immediate focus.”

Daniel thanked Frank Greenstein for his dedicated service as interim President over the past three months and looks forward to working with Frank, Doron Abramovici Vice President, and the entire executive team as they respond to the shifting challenges affecting the Victorian Jewish community.

Clearly, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted on the delivery of all service providers including the JCCV, however new ways of connecting and adapting to change have offered a positive mix of opportunities through greater online meetings, communication, consultation together with real-life engagement. As an example, Daniel pointed to the JCCV’s forthcoming Yom HaShoah communal presentation, which will be delivered online this year.

The challenges of 2020 have enabled greater opportunity for reflection of current roles and placed a stronger focus on community priorities. Daniel Aghion added: “Greater review of all JCCV strategic areas will be undertaken to determine if they are in synergy with community expectations and current needs.”

Judy Fetter, Executive Director stated,Promoting Jewish Life; Developing a Centre of Advocacy; Engaging in Multicultural Connections; and focusing on Affiliates shared objectives are current areas of core importance to the JCCV, with far-reaching responsibilities and interest areas within these categories. Moving forward in a sustained and impactful way will require an evaluation of all services provided as a roof body and determine their communal benefits.”

The community’s first opportunity to view Daniel Aghion in his role as JCCV President will be introducing the JCCV Yom HaShoah online presentation, “Triumph of Survival” on Wednesday 7 April at 7.30pm. To register http://bit.ly/jccv-yh2021
