May-19 Melbourne: Just Add Love with Irris Makler

Read on for article
Celebrate family, food and the feat of survival as part of The Jewish Museum of Australia’s exhibition, Discover Shabbat Through 1001 Lights.

Journey back to your grandmother’s kitchen as we launch Irris Makler’s Just Add Love, a compilation of stories and recipes from survivors of the Holocaust. Feast on dishes from the book as food writer Dani Valent interviews Irris alongside some of her remarkable contributors.

Irris Makler is a foreign correspondent based in Jerusalem. For the past four years, she’s recorded the stories of Holocaust survivors and photographed them with their grandchildren.

Sparked by a search for her grandmother’s honey cake recipe that she never wrote down, the Just Add Love project saw Irris test each recipe alongside women in five kitchens.

The resulting publication showcases not just cookery, but history and photography – as well as each grandparent’s secret ingredient, love.

Presented by the Jewish Museum of Australia and Jewish Holocaust Centre.

The Jewish Holocaust Centre was created by Melbourne Holocaust survivors as a memorial to the six million Jews murdered during World War II. Opening in 1984, its mission is to educate the public to combat antisemitism, racism and prejudice in the community.
