New Zealand will be the first country in the world to celebrate Pesach…and its Jewish Prime Minister will have Shmurah matzah for the festival.

John Key

Rabbi Menachem Goldstein will travel to Wellington, the nation’s capital, from his Christchurch home to deliver the matzah to John Key, the country’s leader and its third Jewish Prime Minister.

Shmurah matzah will also be provided for communal seders in Wellington and Auckland and Rabbi Goldstein together with Rabbi Shmuel Kopel will head a team of fourteen young rabbis from Australia who will conduct seders in the country’s South Island centres of Queenstown, Christchurch, Nelson and Dunedin. The seders are expected to attract over 700 participants.

Rabbi Goldstein told J-Wire: “Most of the guests will be Israeli backpackers but the rabbis will also be making house calls to Jewish New Zealanders throughout the South Island during Pesach.

The rabbis have not forgotten those who cannot make it to a public Seder and have distributed sealed packages of Maror together with Kosher wine and Haggadot.

A recent working visa agreement made between New Zealand and Israel will see an increase in the number of young Israelis visiting the country.
