The nomination is expected to be ratified by the Jewish Agency Board of Governors in July.

The position has been open since the previous chair, the President of Israel Isaac Herzog, stepped down in July 2021 after being elected president.

Doron Almog previously served as the Commander of the IDF Southern Command (2000-2003). Almog founded and serves as Chairman of the Adi Negev-Nahalat Eran Rehabilitation Village, named after his son Eran, who died at a young age from Castleman’s disease.

Almog was one of the torchbearers on Independence Day (2006), as a token of appreciation for his contribution to the development of the Negev. Almog is the recipient of the Israel Prize for Lifetime Achievement and Special Contribution to Society and the State (2016) and Chairman of the Israel Security Award Committee (2022).

President Herzog praised Almog’s selection saying, “Congratulations to my friend, Maj. Gen. (Res.), Doron Almog, winner of the Israel Prize, on the decision of the Jewish Agency’s selection committee to appoint him chairman of the Jewish Agency’s Board. This is a very important role in the Jewish world. To our country; which affects Israeli society, and immigration and absorption. I am confident that his skills, experience and abilities will march this important organization forward. Good luck! ”

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett added: “Doron Almog represents everything that is beautiful in Israel. Doron exemplifies military and civilian heroism, a deep love for the Jewish people, the land and every person as he or she is. This is also the reason why I was pleased to be the one who awarded him the Israel Prize for his life’s work.

I wish Doron great success in connecting the Jewish people to the State of Israel, and in raising Israel’s stature in the world.”

Doron Almog said of his selection, “I am proud and excited about the trust and election. I am grateful to the people of the Agency and its leaders who work day and night to strengthen the Jewish people and the State of Israel. By working together, we will ignite flame and pride in our work for a future of hope for future generations.”

Chairman of the Keren Hayesod World Board of Trustees Steve Lowy was on the nominating committee and says the decision was unanimous. World Chairman Sam Grudwerg issued a statement with Steven Lowy saying: “We congratulate Doron Almog and wish him great success and look forward to working closely together in our work on behalf of the Jewish people and the state of Israel.”

Almog is expected to take up his post in September 2022.
