Israeli Minister for the Diaspora Omer Yankelevich participated in a ‘virtual tour’ of the Sydney Jewish Community on Thursday.

Fresh from an all-night-long budget session at the Knesset, Ms Yankelevich virtually toured Moriah College, the Great Synagogue, the Sydney Jewish Museum, Jewish Care and the Youth 2 Israel project. Despite not being able to visit Sydney up until now, Ms Yankelevich said how much she enjoyed meeting the community and getting a sense of its vibrancy.

The tour was hosted by the Zionist Federation of Australia. ZFA President Jeremy Leibler described the unique characteristics of the NSW Jewish Community to Ms Yankelevich, including its leadership in innovation, philanthropy and Israel program participation. Mr Leibler also told Ms Yankelevich about the six active Zionist youth movements and Jewish student activity in NSW and across Australia.

ZFA CEO Ginette Searle commented “It’s a shame that we weren’t able to show the Minister the Sydney Opera House, or more fully introduce her to the Sydney community, but I was really pleased that this virtual tour occurred. We look forward to welcoming her to Australia once this pandemic is over.”
