On Thursday, the EU Council said in a statement that, following its listing, the IRGC will also be subject to restrictive measures under the EU counterterrorism sanctions regime. This includes freezing its funds and other financial assets or economic resources in EU member states, and prohibiting EU operators from making funds and economic resources available to the group.
Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar commended the EU for this decision saying, “The IRGC is the backbone of Iran’s global terror network and a primary source of instability. It has ruthlessly suppressed its own people – killing thousands during recent protests – and continues to spread violence throughout the Middle East.”
“This decision also carries profound moral weight,” he added. “It tells the Iranian people that they do not stand alone in their fight for freedom and dignity.”
