Israel celebrates its 77th Independence Day
Israel’s 77th Independence Day dawned with a poignant ceremony at the President’s Residence in Jerusalem, where 120 exceptional soldiers from the Israel Defence Forces were honoured.

This year’s festivities, however, unfolded against the sombre backdrop of conflict and the deep national yearning for the safe return of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.
In a heartfelt address, President Isaac Herzog emphasised the plight of the hostages, stating, “Even on our national holiday – and especially on our national holiday – we cannot celebrate independence with a whole heart when our brothers and sisters are not with us. Israel as a nation yearns for them, for their freedom.”
Herzog urged the nation to cling to its core values and unity, declaring, “This uniquely Israeli courage is the wellspring of our strength – a steadfast commitment to bringing all the hostages home. All of them.”
Addressing Hamas’s psychological tactics, he condemned the vile hostage release “ceremonies” in Gaza, pointing to a banner that proclaimed, “Zionism will not prevail.” He countered, “Anyone who witnesses the bravery of Israel – in our soldiers, in our honorees – knows, without a doubt: they are wrong. Zionism will prevail.”
The President also commended Israel’s brave soldiers, security personnel, and emergency responders, many of whom serve with profound personal sacrifice.
To the honoured soldiers, he remarked, “I read your stories and the journeys that brought you to this moment of distinction. Because of you, we will prevail. Because of your generation – we will prevail.”
Later today, President Herzog will host the traditional diplomatic reception for ambassadors and members of the foreign diplomatic corps stationed in Israel. This gathering, which will include Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and other senior officials, aims to reinforce the unbreakable ties between Israel and the global community amid a year fraught with challenges, loss, resilience, and hope.
