Two women diagnosed with cancer will be interviewed by ABC journalist Alison Moldovan ahead of August’s Sydney Jewish Writers Festival.

Rikki Stern was 20 years old, interning in media and working at a chocolate shop, when she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. She has shared many aspects of her experience living with cancer candidly on social media and connected with other women going through the same experience. She is also the founder of Cancer Chicks Australia, helping young women between the ages of 20 and 30 who are living from cancer, and was named Westfield Local Hero in 2019. She was recently interviewed on Channel 7’s The Daily Edition.

Alison Jones is the author of the Jones Family Food Roster, a memoir about how a busy, mother of five school-aged children was diagnosed with a rare and incurable cancer, and how she agonised about her future and the effect her treatment regime would have on her family. Her community rallied around her, bringing home-cooked meals prepared with love, which enabled her to come together with her family every evening for dinner. Her book, interspersed with some of these recipes, is heart-warming and honest. Alison was recently interviewed in Melbourne by ABC broadcaster and writer, Sian Prior.

Both women chose to candidly share their experiences – Alison in a memoir, Rikki on Instagram – about living with cancer and the strength of the Jewish community. Join Alison and Rikki as they talk about their journeys, why they chose to tell their stories, and how the community came together to support them. They will be interviewed by ABC radio journalist from the Religion and Ethics Report, Alice Moldovan, on Sunday 16 Feb 2pm-3.30pm at Double Bay Library. Alison’s book will be sold at the event.

Tickets are $20 and 50% of ticket sales go to support to Pink Hope and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

Bookings essential at www.shalom.edu.au or on 9381 4000.
