Fijian soldiers safe in Israel

45 Fijian soldiers seized by Syrian rebels two weeks ago have been released and are now in Israel following their ordeal.

United NationsThe soldiers are member of the United Nations peace-keeping force.

A spokesperson for the Israeli embassy in Canberra told J-Wire:  “Israel is happy to see the Fijian UN peacekeepers safe and sound. We thank Fiji for its long lasting friendship and its meaningful and lasting contribution to the UN peacekeeping forces” .

Media reports say  that the soldiers were undergoing medical and psychological tests in Israel and were reported as being in good spirit.

Fiji is diplomatically connected to Israel through the Australian embassy.
