“As part of the 2014 NSW Seniors Week celebrations, Ageing, Disability and Home Care (ADHC) introduced Local Achievement Awards to honour seniors in our electorate,” Ms Upton said.

“This is the first year Local Achievement Awards have been presented and are one way in which the community can show its appreciation for the talents, skills and generosity of this impressive group.

“Ethel has made an outstanding contribution to the community and I was delighted to have had the opportunity of recognising her in this way,” Ms Upton said.

Ethel is a long standing volunteer at the Sydney Jewish Museum and in her role she helps in organising, typing and cataloguing stories of holocaust survivors. Ethel provides the assistance needed for survivors to tell their stories and has contributed to the creation of a database. Ethel worked on the assembly and display of documents for a special exhibition at the Sydney Jewish Museum on South African Jews who migrated to Australia.

Ethel has also written a book entitled, “Latvia’s Haunting Secrets’. The book is a guide to the use of multi-disciplinary research methods for others in the community, especially the local Jewish community, to research their family history.

“I believe it is important to give thanks where it is due and it was fitting to present Ethel with her award at the special morning tea that was attended by seniors from across the Vaucluse electorate,” Ms Upton said.

The Vaucluse Electorate Seniors Morning Tea was held at the Gaden Centre.
