Amir Peretz announced candidacy for Israel’s Presidency

Amir Peretz, chairman of the Labor Party and currently the Minister of Economy, announced Thursday his intentions to run for the position of the next President of the State of Israel after Reuven Rivlin ends his tenure.

He has served as a Member of Knesset almost continuously since 1988 He has previously served as Minister of Defense, during which he promoted the Iron Dome defence project and Minister of Environmental Protection.

Between 1983 and1988, Peretz was head of the Sderot Council. Between 1995 and 2006, he served as Chairman of the Histadrut labour federation.

Peretz was born in 1952 in Boujad Morocco and immigrated to Israel in 1956.

He is married and the father of four and lives in Sderot.

The president’s office in Israel is mostly ceremonial. He is elected by the MKs.

Several other names, including famed singer Yehoram Gaon, Professor Shimon Shitrit, and Miriam Peretz, have also been mentioned as possible candidates.

The 11th President of the State of Israel is expected to enter office in July 2021.
