Independent MP for Wentworth Allegra Spender had diarised an address at the 25th Anniversary of Courage to Care NSW.

Allegra Spender

But Courage to Care has uninvited Allegra Spender, with the organisation’s CEO Ed St John circulating: “In light of recent events, it has been mutually agreed that it would be in the best interests of our organisation, and the event if she was to withdraw.

The recent event we referred to was a letter to foreign minister Penny Wong signed by Teal and independent MPs, including Miss Spender, which requested that a means of funding humanitarian aid to Gazans be found including potentially UNRWA.

We have concluded that in the context of this letter, Ms Spender’s presence at the event would be distracting to the important achievements and mission of Courage to Care, New South Wales

This follows a plea from the Teals and other MPs in a letter to Foreign Minister Penny Wong to restart humanitarian aid to the people in Gaza. The letter stressed the aid should be directed only to those in need and not “support terrorism”.

She told J-Wire: “The allegations against some UNRWA staff are very serious, but humanitarian aid is critical right now, and we need to find options for delivery of aid, either through other organisations if they have the infrastructure, or through UNRWA under clear conditions.

Given strong feelings by some in the community about UNRWA, Courage for Care and I agreed that my presence would be distracting and
I do not want this issue to distract from the vital fundraising efforts of Courage to Care.
I have always supported the organisation and I will continue to do so.
Whilst I won’t be attending the event, what I am doing over the next two weeks is meeting with university Vice-Chancellors in Sydney to represent the concerns of Jewish students and drive greater action against antisemitism on campuses.
I will continue to stand up for the Jewish community.“

despite all the pleese for the starving Gazans, there seems to be plenty fruit at the market, and none of the adults look like they are starved, only the children look starved and some emaciated. Maybe the adults should share and give some of their food to the kids !

Allegra and the Teals would be better off lobbying Penny Wong to urge UNRWA to remove Gaza’s women, children, the sick and the elderly from Gaza to the 50 refugee camps UNRWA administers outside Gaza. Keeping them penned in Gaza when a safer haven is available outside Gaza is unhumanitarian and a shocking indictment on UNRWA and the UN.

Good on Courage to Care for showing initiative.
She should never have been asked in the first place.
