Medium, the online platform used by Adelaide University’s student newspaper On Dit, has reviewed the paper’s article For Palestine. There is No Ceasefire and suspended its publication.

The Online Hate Prevention Institute had advised Medium of the article, pointing out it breached its rules against “Threats of violence and incitement” and “Hateful content”.

In addition to the “Death to Israel” comment contained in the article and the call for Israel’s destruction, OHPI also referred Medium to the IHRA Working Definition of antisemitism and the example of “Denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavour.”
Medium has reviewed the article, confirmed it violates its rules, and taken action to suspend the article in response to the Online Hate Prevention Institute’s notification. Visitors to the article’s web address will now notice that it has been removed.
Dr Andre Oboler, CEO of the Online Hate Prevention Institute, told J-Wire: “Medium’s response to our notification and their removal of the antisemitic article was timely, effective, and in keeping with their global policies. It is concerning that a publication that supposedly operates under editorial oversight, and is associated with a University, would allow such a blatant example of antisemitism to be published and would need their platform provider to intervene. This raises serious questions about the editorial processes at the magazine and the fitness of the current editorial board members to operate a media publication.”
The Jewish Community Council of South Australia is in contact with the university.
