For young Australian Jews working in New York City, a new initiative offering a social centre and mentoring has been launched by Sydney;s Central Synagogue’s Rabbi Levi Wolff.

A New Yorker himself, Rabbi Wolff got the idea of bringing young Australians in New York together when he became aware that some young people transferred in most cases temporarily to New York did not have direct family in the metropolis.

He told J-Wire: “The plan is to set up a social network and to get older Australians working and living in New York to offer mentoring services to the younger ones. They could deal with such matters as finding an apartment, finding suitable contacts, somewhere to go for Shabbat dinner…the list is endless.”

The first function will be held in Manhattan next Thursday.

Rabbi Wolff will be there personally to join his brother Rabbi Chezky Wolff who is the spiritual head of the 150-yr-old Chelsea Synagogue.

The initial function will be held at Agar house in the Village.

Rabbi Wolff added: “We hope to be able to provide regular Shabbat dinners for you Aussies in New York….but if you’re from New Zealand or Singapore or anywhere else from this part of the world, you will be made very welcome.”

Rabbi Wolff said that bookings were already very encouraging.
